COTD - The Chariot (Sacred Art & Transformational Tarot)

The Chariot is the 7th Trump card in the Major Arcana.  Traditionally it represents independence, self-sufficiency and self-determination.  The Chariot represents our image of ourselves as in charge of our lives and directed our journey along whichever path we choose.  It also symbolizes victory and control.  The Chariot is about focusing on steering the course of your life and determining what direction you should take next.

When I first looked at the image on the Sacred Art Chariot I didn't get it.  It certainly didn't seem to portray the sense of someone being self-sufficient and in control.  Then I realized that I was focusing on the figure in the foreground.  The bearded figure in the back appears very god-like and in command.  He seems to be controlling the horses by force of will.  It doesn't look like he has any reins.  The young skateboarder on the Transformational Challenge card seems to be falling off his skateboard after making it down a flight of stairs.  Although he may not be "in control" it seems apparent that he is doing what he wants to be doing.  He is determined and directed.  He knows the potential risks involved in skateboarding down the stairs but chooses to do it anyway.

This card speaks of being focused, controlled and determined and being willing to face the risks and challenges that may arise as a result of being independent and directed.  Maturity, making choices and life itself are filled with risk and challenges.  But the only way to grow and learn and guide our own lives is by being willing to take those risks and chances.  If we always take the safe path, the secure path, then we'd never leave home.  We would never push our own boundaries and explore the limits of our tolerances.

I have learned that in many of those life experiences I've had that were ultimately transformative were the result of being willing ta take the risk; to face the challenge.  I might have preferred an easier path but I have to admit there is something about taking a risk that makes you feel alive and energized.  The adrenaline rush is amazing.  And I would think that one feels the same adrenaline rush when participating in any type of extreme sport or trying to control a pair of horses.

On a practical level, I think this card is a nudge to drive the car more.  I've had a driver's licence for years but I rarely drive.  I can drive but I get easily intimated by traffic.  Actually what intimidates me is my own self-doubts.  I don't think I'm an expert driver so I prefer not to drive.  But I also realize that if I don't get more experience as a drive, I'll never be an "expert".  And I have a special interest in it right now because I want to drive in the drag races at the Mopar Nationals in Englishtown, NJ next year.  I love drag racing - it's quick and exciting (as opposed to NASCAR's "round and round we go" approach).  And at least once in my life I want to take the chance.  I want to feel that adrenaline rush.  I want to feel in control and take a risk.  And the only way that is ever going to happens is for me to take charge and take a chance.  I need to challenge myself in ways that let me expand my horizons.
