25 Things about me - in no particular order

  1. I am the oldest of 4 children born to teenage parents.  Mom was 16 and Dad had just turned 17 when I was born.  My brother Tom was killed at the age of 16 by a homeless man.  Today would have been his 38 birthday.
  2. I have a MA in forensic psychology and am currently completing a Masters in Public Administration
  3. When I was younger I was always the oddball child who never seemed to fit in.  I wanted to but just didn’t understand all the subtleties and nuances to being part of a crowd.
  4. I have been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember.  As a small child I remember my mother signing me up for some type of Dr. Seuss book club and I was so excited to get those books.  The Lorax is still one of my heroes.  I still adore Dr. Seuss and my book collection is larger than some bookstores’.
  5. I consider Led Zeppelin music to be a sensual experience.
  6. I consider myself lucky to have attending the Catholic high school I did.  I learned more about the history of the Catholic Church and true Christianity from my teachers there than I ever have from “religious instruction” classes.  Although I am not Catholic anymore, I appreciate what they taught me.
  7. I was told to leave my confirmation ceremony if I couldn’t be quiet.  I was ready to leave but my mother made me sit back down.
  8. I am a born and bred New Yorker with little tolerance for transplants and tourists.  I actually mourn the New York of the 70s when I was growing up.  My neighborhood was a true community whereas now it’s just a hip place for 20-somethings to get drunk and make a lot of noise.
  9. I met my husband when I was 16 years old (he was 24) and we’ve been together ever since.  We knew each other from the neighborhood.  One night I was hanging out in a bar and one of his friends was harassing me.  When the man got up to go to the bathroom my husband leaned over and said “if he doesn’t leave you alone I’ll kill him for you”.  What can I say, I fell in love.  That was in January 1983.
  10. I have no children and have never wanted children.  I never even liked baby dolls.
  11. On the other hand, I adore Barbie.  I currently have a Barbie and Fashion Royalty doll collection that totals almost 400 dolls.
  12. I have over 200 Tarot decks and I switch decks each month so that I can at least try to use them all at least once.  My first deck was the Arcus Arcanum.  My first deck that was not mass published (at the time) was Arnell Ando’s Transformational Tarot.  I still remember debating with myself before buying it because it was more expensive than the other decks I had bought up to that point.
  13. I grew up reading Greek and Norse mythology.  When I was a teen my friends and I wanted to have a club with nicknames and I convinced them to use the names of Greek goddesses.  I was Persephone, although I would have been fine with Athena too.
  14. I feel absolutely no connection to the Moon but I am very solar oriented.
  15. When I was in grammar school I was known as “the nutcracker” by the boys.
  16. I have every issue of SageWoman magazine ever published.  I learned about it from an issue of Ms. Magazine.  This is also how I learned about Joanna Powell Colbert’s wonderful artwork.
  17. I am a long-time Star Trek fan (mainly the classic original series) and love science fiction, even though science sometimes confuses me.
  18. I have an odd obsession with serial killers and mass murders.
  19. My hubby and I have a small but growing collection of films shot in NYC, especially from the late 60s and 70s.  I love looking at the city then.
  20. I love to cook but don’t do it nearly as much as I’d like.
  21. I used to write poetry and even won a few awards for it.  I was also the youngest editor of the PAL newspaper at 12 and as a result I got to meet Frank Gifford, Phil Rizzuto and the Bee Gees!  I once thought I’d like to be a reporter or a writer but my first college level English comp course took care of that.
  22. I am a certified CPR instructor and a certified Child Abuse Awareness instructor.
  23. I want to race my Dodge Magnum at the Mopar Nationals in Englishtown, NJ.
  24. I am an introvert with extroverted tendencies or else I’m an extrovert with a well developed need to hibernate periodically.  I get easily overwhelmed in large groups of people, especially if I don’t already know them.
  25. I think fart jokes are absolutely, side-splittingly funny.  In fact just saying the word to me makes me break out in uncontrollable laughter.  It’s pretty embarrassing sometimes because if I even think I hear a fart, I break into gales of unexplained laughter which makes the folks around me back away in confusion because they have no idea what I’m laughing at.  Then again I think The Simpsons and Family Guy are two of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen.
