Wednesday Just Won't Go - The Star (Zerner-Farber & Celtic Wisdom Tarot)

Traditionally The Star can refer to themes of spiritual healing, the light at the end of the tunnel, the balance between heaven and earth or the spiritual and the mundane, purity and spiritual guidance.  The Star can symbolize experiencing the boundless, free abundance of the Universe.  Unbounded or psychological or psychic energy is flowing to you.  You're feeling personally energized and filled enthusiasm.  There is a never ending supply of this powerful resource within you that can be used in any way you desire.

The Celtic Wisdom Dreamer shows two yew trees, their roots digging deep within the earth, whose trunks meet together and ultimately seem to merge into one.  Red berries decorate the green leaves of the yew trees.  Nestled among the leaves is a two faced head, able to face in two directions at the same time.  The darkened night sky overhead is lit by a brilliant, radiant 8 pointed star.

The Dreamer shows the god Noden, aka Iriel Faith (True Seer) and Nuada Airgetlam (Silver-Arm) who had a healing and dream incubation shrine on the banks of the Severn.  The two headed nature of the god represents outward sight of the physical senses and the inward sight of the seer or dreamer.  The yew is the Celtic tree to the Otherworld, gateway to the Land of Promise.  Its evergreen spines and red berries create the appearance of a tree on fire.  Looking at this card I get the sense of having come through the darkness within the yew tree trunks and emerging into the night sky to see the glorious 8-pointed star overhead.  There is a sense of reuniting, joining together two halves; of healing splits.  In one sense while looking at this card it struck me that it would be perfect to pull for someone suffering from mental illness - a healing of the split in the psyche.

The Zerner-Farber Star card shows a nude woman with material discreetly draped about her pouring a rain of starshine down into the heart of a flower growing at her feet.  She appears to be standing on water and there are fan-shaped designs decorated the air behind her.  Is the flower us?  Is she pouring down the healing of the stars to enrich this world?  Could be.

I always view this card as one of hope and healing.  No matter how dark and hopeless things may seem, when The Star appears things seem a little brighter.  I can't imagine staring at the night sky when it is full of stars and not feeling a sense of wonder and hope.  There is so much possibility out there that how can I possible remain pessimistic for long.

On a more practical note, I went to see Star Trek tonight.  I absolutely loved it!!!  The movie reminded me of why I was such a fan of the original series.  It looks at the darkest aspects of human nature and still offers up a ray of hope that things will get better.  Humanity will manage to reach the stars.  We will manage to overcome our internal rivalries and prejudices and work together to create a better future.  We will find life on other planets.  How could I not be hopeful in the face of that kind of potentially amazing future.  As a child I remember believing that Star Trek wasn't some fictional series but instead I though Gene Roddenberry was a visionary (much like Rod Serling).  Much like the figure on the Celtic Wisdom Dreamer, Roddenberry could see both the past and the future and created a vision to help us heal.  To me, it was as if he tapped into our future and was telling us the stories of what will happen some day, not just what might.  His characters were so engaging and appealing that I believed they really were friends.  I didn't just think their stories were scripts written for entertainment purposes. I thought these were oracular tales of future events.  I still believe that.  To me, Star Trek offers a vision of hope and healing that connects beautifully with The Star card.  As Joni Mitchell wrote and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young once sang "We are stardust, we are we are golden, We are billion year old carbon. And we got to get ourselves back to the garden."
