I'm burning, I'm burning, I'm burning for you - How can I bring joy and happiness into my life today? 5 of Wands (Artist's Inner Vision & Fairy Tale)

Wands are associated with the element of fire as well as with inspiration, energy, intuition and creative imagination.  This suit often reveals something you "need to light a fire under".  The number 5 represents that added something that brings the situation out of balance again.  It represents the struggle and challenge of inner and outer growth.  This card can represent inspired chaos and freeing your expression and energy.  Challenging yourself to adapt and change; pushing yourself to adjust your self-image until it feels more positive or appropriate.  You might be experiencing self-doubt.  Whatever the worlds sees, you know you are changing yourself.

It's pretty ironic that I drew this card in response to this question.  The image on the Artist's Inner Vision (AIV) cards shows a man sitting at a table with 5 spikes circling his head.  His head is thrown back, although whether in thought or agony is not clear to me.  His arms are behind his back and the table before him is a cracked and barren landscape.  The background behind him is flame colored and molten in appearance.  At first I thought he was being attacked by these spikes.  Then as I looked at his expression I got the sense that he is struggling but the struggle is to keep all those spikes in the air.  It's as though he is a psychic testing his own abilities.  Perhaps his skill is psychokinesis and he is learning to master it.  The risk is that if he allows his concentration falter he might bring all those spikes down upon his head.  Not exactly an appealing prospect.

Looking at the Snow Queen shown on the Fairy Tale 5 of Wands I am struck by her almost vacant stare.  It is as if there is no soul behind those cold, crystal clear eyes.  Is she real?  Does she exists or is she some part of this young boy?  Some cold, almost inhuman side hidden deep within.

I think all of us have a side of our personality that seems cold, inhuman and almost evil.  That side that sometimes doesn't care about the welfare or wellbeing of others; that side that focuses on the ugliness of life.  This cold, distant side is one we usually keep under control or try to bury deep within our psyche.  It would be so easy to give it dominance but that would make the world such a frigid, lifeless place that might prefer to live someone else.

In both cards it seems as if we are struggling within ourselves to keep our energy, our spark, our very human nature in balance.  To try to blend our impetuous, passionate, fiery energy with some practicality.  We don't want to lose ourselves in the battle, but we don't want to douse that fiery spirit either.  This card seems to symbolize a portion of that process - when that fiery energy is transformed in a crucible transmuted into something less volatile and unpredictable.

So in order to bring happiness and joy into my life, I need to learn how to achieve this goal.  Before I can move on the a place where I am victorious I have to win that battle and struggle with those forces inside myself.  They aren't bad forces, merely untamed, chaotic ones.  I need to keep fighting, keep struggling until I reach that goal.  The struggle itself sometimes makes me happy - as long as it doesn't seem to be a pointless struggle.
