What do I need to focus on today? - Knight of Pentacles (Jane Austen & New York Tarot)

The Knight of Pentacles can represent a focus that is too narrow; the need to develop greater breadth of vision; experimenting with imaginative problem-solving techniques; lethargy, lack of discipline; inability to make plans, limited vision; irresponsibility, especially when it comes to carrying out assignments. Knights symbolize protection, strength, ambition and questing. Pentacles are associated with the material world, acquisitions of wealth and possessions, our connection to Earth and Nature, sensation, matters pertaining to the physical plane and the element of earth. Pentacles can also be connected with practicality, groundedness and being realistic.
"You are focusing so hard on establishing security that nothing else seems relevant. You may seem like a workaholic. You are putting all your energy into your home, career, physical body, or financial affairs. You are feeling that you need to work hard right now, with few distractions." - Gail Fairfield
Ah, my Knight of Pentacles - I often see him as my hubby. Actually my view of him actually is a mix of both Knight and King of Pentacles but right now he's in a frustrated Knight phase. He wants to take action on a variety of issues but if finding himself thwarted at several turns.
Having said that this card may be telling me that I need to focus some energy on my husband today. This can sometimes be challenging, especially on Tuesdays, because that is when I have my class and tend to be so caught up in finishing homework assignments that he gets short shrift. I also thin that sometimes I tend to take him for granted. He is so self sufficient that sometimes it is easy to forget he needs support and attention too. I need to remember that more often; take the time to appreciate him and show that.
I find it interesting that Edward Farrars is used to represent the Knight of Pentacles in the Jane Austen Tarot. He has always struck me as such an indecisive character - rather inconstant in his affection for Elinor. However I realize that is really more my reaction to Hugh Grant's portrayal of him in the Emma Thompson movie version of Sense and Sensibility. In reality Edward does have a strong sense of duty and responsibility. Even though he has strong feelings for Elinor, he honors his previous engagement to Lucy. It might be a difficult choice to make but it is the only one his honor will allow him to make. That sense of duty and rightness is something that seems to be at the core of the Knight of Pentacles. Even when his heart might call him to make another choice, his responsibility and honor demand he stay true. This is not a man who follows the axiom "the heart wants what it wants" or believes that love is a reason for leaving his family or starting an affair. The Knight of Pentacles believes in stability, duty and honor. This may sometimes seem like a poor substitute for romance and passion but to be perfectly honest I'd prefer a certain stolidness and stability for that heady but unreliable thing called passion any day.
