What am I ignoring? - 5 of Earth/Pentacles R (Elemental & RWS)

The number 5 represents the need for adjustment, some kind of change, or that added something that brings the situation out of balance again.  It represents the struggle and challenge of inner and outer growth; adapting to feedback about your action; working out the kinks.  Coins are associated with the material world, acquisitions of wealth and possessions, our connection to Earth and Nature, sensation, matters pertaining to the physical plane, the body, health and physical or sexual activities.  Coins can also be connected with practicality, groundedness and being realistic.

'You're experiencing shifts and adjustments in your inner sense of security or centeredness.  You may feel that your basic groundedness is being challenged.  You're changing the ways in which you feel connected with the earth.  You're altering or questioning your "security blanket". - Gail Fairfield

Again, I am drawn to connect these cards with my Uncle Jack's death.  Both cards carry a sense of sadness and loss, as though everything of value in the world has gone.  We are left huddling outside in the cold with no chance of relief.  Or perhaps it is that the ground beneath our feet, the foundation upon which we counted, has shaken and upset that stability.  That certainly describes how the family feels about Uncle Jack's loss.  I know how sad and difficult it is for me to deal with his passing.  How much harder must it be for his widow and children?  My godparents (Uncle Jack and Aunt Beanie) were married for 57 years.  They raised 7 sons together and seemed very close and happy together.  It's not that their lives seemed perfect but that the two of them seemed able to weather the storms together.

When I saw Aunt Beanie at the wake tonight her grief cut through me.  She tried to put on a good face and be positive for the rest of the family but every so often she broke down and her sobs were pitiful.  They began dating when they were 15 years old and genuinely seemed to be partners in life.  Dealing with such a loss is almost more than I can imagine.

Of course the message I get from the flip side of this card (literally) is that even when someone is not longer with us in a physical sense, they still exist in our memories and our hearts.  Even if they cannot hold our hand and comfort us through the bad times, they can watch over us and still guard and guide us in spirit.  If that's possible, I am certain that Uncle Jack will find the way to do just that.  So in reality we are never alone and lost in the world, we just have to trust that the spirits of our loved ones who have moved on to another plane of existence still care and watch over us.  We are never truly alone.
